Motivated by my love of vintage photographs, I set out do a series of hand-coloured portraits of friends dressed in period-style clothes I had around the apartment. Like so many projects, it quickly got sidelined by unexpected events–in this case a broken camera and a big earthquake–but I still have all the negatives and intend to return to it eventually. This one of my old friend Yuki was a test print on Ilford MGIV paper that I was about to throw out, but instead decided to bleach out and add a bit of sepia toning. It came out unexpectedly well. I finally got the camera, a beautiful old Rolleiflex SL66, fixed in London and returned to Tokyo, only to discover it still doesn’t work. Sometimes I wonder why I bother…
